Shopping at a fashion store for clothes

Visually impaired shoppers face real barriers when using modern touchscreen payment terminals, from unclear on-screen cues to complex PIN entry flows. With the European Accessibility Act (EAA) requiring all terminals to be accessible by June 28, 2025, it’s more important than ever for payment experiences to be intuitive, inclusive, and compliant. At Adyen, we see this not just as a regulatory milestone but as an opportunity to raise the standard for accessible in-person payments across the industry.

How Adyen is solving it

Our Accessible Audio Solution for Android terminals ensures compliance across all PCI PTS 6 Android devices while significantly improving usability for visually impaired shoppers. The solution offers clear audio guidance through every step of the payment flow, delivered via speaker or headphone. For secure PIN entry, we’ve introduced an accessible screen with larger fonts, high-contrast visual elements, and intuitive swipe-and-double-tap interactions. We’ve also extended the PIN entry timeout to five minutes to reduce pressure during the process. This feature set supports more than 25 languages and has been validated through close collaboration with Vispero/TPGi, RNIB, Funka, and extensive testing with blind users.

Recognition

We’re proud to share that this work has been awarded the Zero Project Award 2026, a globally respected recognition in partnership with the United Nations. At Adyen, we believe accessibility is a journey, not a checkbox. This award is a major milestone in our ongoing commitment to make payments seamless, secure, and inclusive for everyone.
