Stop failed ACH payments before they happen

We're introducing proactive ACH account blocks to help you reduce failed payments and fraud. When an ACH debit receives a terminal return for an unrecoverable reason, Adyen automatically blocks future payment attempts from that bank account across the Adyen network. Instead of waiting days for a return, you'll receive immediate feedback when an invalid account is used.

Improve payment reliability with automatic account validation

ACH returns caused by closed, invalid, or non-transactional bank accounts increase operational work and can expose your business to fraud. By automatically preventing future payment attempts on supported accounts, you can lower return rates, reduce unnecessary processing, and identify invalid payment details sooner. The feature currently blocks accounts associated with supported unrecoverable return codes, including R02 (Account closed), R03 (No account), and R04 (Invalid account number). We'll continue expanding coverage by adding additional return codes over time.

Know what to do when a payment is blocked

No action is required to benefit from this feature. If a payment is attempted using a blocked account, the capture will fail immediately and you'll receive the relevant error or webhook notification. You can either ask your shopper to provide updated bank account details or, if the account has been restored, submit supporting documentation through Adyen Support to request that the account be unblocked.
