As Shoptalk 2025 wrapped in Las Vegas, the future of retail is clear—success will hinge on mastering data at scale, security that matches the speed of fraudsters, and seamless payment infrastructure.

Missed out on Shoptalk? Here we break down the three key takeaways from conversations with merchants, retailers and technology partners:

#1 Why data makes the difference

The undeniable power of data to revolutionize retail was a central and dominant theme at Shoptalk. The industry is increasingly focused, and excited, on capturing information shopper touchpoints and turning these into actionable strategies that deliver superior customer experiences and streamlined operations. This involves not only understanding purchasing patterns but also leveraging data to empower in-store associates and create consistent brand experiences across all channels.

The drive to understand customers better was evident in discussions, as James Brown, Business Development - Canada, at Adyen, noted, retailers are striving to "find the best ways to use data. They're trying to create curated experiences for their customers and find ways to be able to pull all that data together.”

This ambition extends to the in-store environment, where Christopher Charles, Global Solution Consulting Manager at Aptos, explained the company’s focus on leveraging technology to "build out customer profiles, [and] give those insights to the associates in-store…[and] just provide ease of access to the information that retailers are gathering about their people."

The importance of understanding customer interactions in real-time was highlighted by Georgina Nelson, Founder & CEO, TruRating, with the need to have "real time representative data that provides real time insight down to the store level, down to each hour as to what those key drivers are to a fantastic customer experience".

#2 Boost authorizations and keep security strong

Providing a frictionless payment experience for retail customers is crucial, but it must be underpinned by robust security measures. Conversations at Shoptalk highlighted the continuous efforts to optimize payment authorizations while safeguarding against fraud and therefore delivering consumer trust.

Merchants expressed a clear need to "find ways to maximize authorizations, but they're also concerned with fraud”, James Brown notes, “so how do they make sure that good transactions go through? But at the same time, we're not blocking the good transactions from going through, but we're also keeping the fraudsters out from pushing through chargebacks." Adyen Uplift was also a point of discussion for many retailers, looking to leverage AI-driven capabilities to stop fraud and drive conversions at scale. James Amos, Enterprise Sales - US, Adyen, elaborated, attendees “were keen to discuss upgrades we've made to Protect and how we're leveraging AI to basically make it easier for merchants to stop fraud."

Abby Rogers, Senior Manager - Global Business Development at Visa, emphasized the significance of this, noting that "relying on partners…like Adyen to really deliver and just make sure that fraud doesn't happen and increase that consumer trust. So that kind of partner trust in a relationship is really key in the fraud space." Building customer confidence in the security of transactions is paramount, particularly as new payment methods and digital interactions become more common, and retailers need to look to trusted technology partners to deliver the necessary security infrastructure and expertise.

#3 The power of payment simplicity

A consistent and resounding message was the critical need for simplicity within the payment ecosystem, benefiting both retailers seeking operational efficiency and consumers desiring frictionless experiences.

A key aspect highlighted by Michael Sherbut, Retail Partner - Canada, at Rains, is the understanding of their customers' expectation for a straightforward and easy transaction. "Our customers are not looking for hassle on their checkout. They're wanting the experience to be seamless. They're wanting not to feel like they're overreaching when they're actually trying to close a transaction with us. It shouldn't be a massive part of the thought process."

The fundamental need to streamline payments was a recurring theme in conversations with retailers as Jennifer Allen-Butler, Enterprise Sales - US at Adyen, explains, “most of the conversations I've had so far are focused around simplification. There are a lot of people I've worked with that want to simplify their payment landscape... they spend a lot of overhead on reconciliation, and that's one of their biggest issues is reducing that FTE count to be able to simplify their business."

For global retailers, the challenges of navigating diverse payment methods and providers across different regions are significant. The ability to consolidate these operations with a single, unified platform offers substantial benefits in terms of both efficiency and cost savings. Watch the video now to see more insights:
