Adyen, the financial technology platform of choice for leading companies, and TAP Air Portugal, Portugal's leading airline, announce the modernization of the airline's payment technology infrastructure at Brazilian airports. This initiative marks a new chapter in the global partnership between the companies, which began in 2013, and expands this collaboration to one of TAP's most strategic markets, consolidating a unified platform designed to offer a more modern, efficient, and secure payment experience at physical service counters.

The new infrastructure provided by Adyen is equipped to seamlessly support multiple payment methods, allowing passengers to pay using cards, digital wallets (such as Apple Pay and Google Pay), and, for the first time at the airline's counters in Brazil, Pix. In this initial phase, the technology will be available at Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo and Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (Galeão) in Rio de Janeiro, with plans for a progressive expansion to the fifteen other Brazilian airports served by the airline. The new terminals optimize in-person services provided at the counters, such as ticket issuance, flight changes, class upgrades, and additional baggage payments. As a result, Pix, which was already available through TAP's digital channels and call centers, now becomes part of the airline's in-person service experience in Brazil.

The new infrastructure expands choices for customers and generates operational gains for the airline. By integrating different payment methods into a single environment, the solution simplifies transaction processing and contributes to faster and smoother service at the counters. Additionally, by choosing Pix, customers pay directly in Brazilian Reais, avoiding potential currency fluctuations between the date of purchase and the credit card billing statement date, as well as possible fees associated with international card transactions.

“Investing in the modernization of our technological infrastructure at Brazilian airports is a fundamental step toward elevating our customers' experience. Brazil is a strategic market where payment habits evolve rapidly, and this initiative, carried out together with Adyen, reinforces our commitment to innovation. More than just incorporating new payment methods, we are providing a platform built to keep pace with this evolution, offering passengers a simpler, integrated, and more convenient experience at our service desks," says Renato Inácio, CFO of TAP Air Portugal.

This modernization meets industry needs mapped out by Adyen's Hospitality and Travel Report. The study reveals that 53% of hospitality and travel companies identify fragmented payment systems as inefficient and time-consuming, while also showing that one of the top preferences for passengers is not having to carry cash when traveling and relying on digital payments. This preference is backed by data from the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB), which indicates that over 170 million people use Pix (80% of the population), with an impressive volume of over 7 billion transactions recorded in January 2026 alone.

“The expansion of our global partnership with TAP to physical terminals in Brazil demonstrates how financial technology can transform the payment experience across different customer touchpoints. With a unified infrastructure, the airline can now offer a consistent payment journey across physical and digital channels, while gaining greater operational efficiency, centralized data, and a technological foundation prepared to keep pace with the next market evolutions,” says Daniel Tafelli, Head of Payment Partnerships at Adyen in Latin America.

The new infrastructure also strengthens transaction security. According to Adyen’s Hospitality and Travel Report, 66% of businesses believe that the lack of centralized payment data hinders their ability to innovate, control costs, and effectively prevent fraud. By integrating methods like Pix, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, which feature advanced authentication mechanisms, the solution helps reduce fraud risks and chargebacks, especially in face-to-face airport operations. With this joint investment, TAP and Adyen established a financial infrastructure prepared to keep pace with the dynamism of payment methods and support future innovations in the passenger experience.
