A payment orchestration API is the integration point through which your systems connect to the orchestration layer. It handles routing logic, communicates with the PSPs sitting behind the orchestrator, and manages transaction responses. The quality and flexibility of that API matter when evaluating providers: they affect how quickly you can add new payment methods, how much engineering lift is required to maintain integrations, and how dependent your roadmap becomes on the orchestrator's release schedule.

The three pressure-test questions in this article are a good starting point, but a few additional factors are worth evaluating: the financial strength and maturity of the provider (particularly relevant if payment reliability underpins your cash flow), the flexibility of the API and how easily it automates routing within your existing stack, whether the orchestrator supports the payment options and geographies you need, and what happens to your payment data and customer tokens if you ever want to move away.

Omnichannel payment orchestration refers to applying routing and failover logic across both online and in-person payment channels, so that a single orchestration layer manages transactions regardless of their origin. In practice, this adds another layer of complexity, since in-store payment infrastructure has different technical requirements than online flows. The same trade-offs apply: the benefit of resilience across channels must be weighed against the operational overhead of maintaining a more complex setup and the risk of further fragmenting payment data.
