The announcement marks the first time that Ryanair’s customers have been able to purchase tickets directly from the airline with iDEAL, which is significant because it is the most popular payment method in the Netherlands, accounting for about 60% of all online payment volume and 40% of payment volume in the travel industry. By providing iDEAL as a payment option, Ryanair and Adyen are improving the payment experience and giving customers in the Netherlands the choice to pay with the method with which they feel most comfortable.

“For businesses expanding globally, the value of offering local payment methods is enormous. For example, in markets like the Netherlands and China, local payment methods account for upwards of 50% of online transaction volume,” said Roelant Prins, CCO, Adyen. “We’re proud to be powering growth for global businesses such as Ryanair by supporting over 250 local payment methods worldwide,” he added.

“Millions of Dutch consumers use iDeal annually and Ryanair is pleased to have reached this agreement with Adyen to offer this payment option on the website,” Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Robin Kiely said. “As Europe’s biggest airline carrying 90m customers this year, we are continually improving our customer experience through our “Always Getting Better” programme, which has seen the introduction of allocated seating, a free second carry-on bag, reduced fees, a new website, a smartphone app with mobile boarding passes and our Family Extra and Business Plus services, as we continue to offer so much more than just the lowest fares.”

Ryanair first partnered with Adyen in March 2014 to offer the option for Ryanair customers in Germany to purchase flight tickets with SEPA Direct Debit.
