Epos Now & Adyen

How Epos Now moved from a point of sale provider to a complete fintech platform

If a software platform wants to expand from a POS provider into a financial services platform, how do they do it without becoming a bank?

For Epos Now, they embedded financial services directly into the software their SME customers already know and use. Working with Adyen over the last five years has allowed them to integrate a financial services offering combining payments, business accounts, capital, and card issuing into a single platform.

To mark this milestone, Adyen's Carlos Hernandez visited the Epos Now headquarters to speak with Jason Downing, SVP of Product Management to discuss the company's journey. Carlos also met with customers to understand how these products help local high street and hospitality businesses operate and grow.

A long-term partnership for growth

The relationship between Epos Now and Adyen has evolved far beyond a typical vendor partnership.

After five years of collaboration, a new five-year agreement has been signed, reinforcing a shared commitment to expanding embedded financial services.

Working closely on product development and long-term strategy has helped Epos Now bring new capabilities to SMEs faster, while evolving with customer needs. Today, 1 in 4 merchants across the Epos Now ecosystem are eligible to use at least one embedded financial product.

As Jason explains, "We see it as a genuine strategic partnership. We have a seat at the table, our feedback shapes the roadmap, and together we're bringing new capabilities to market."

One financial stack, fewer moving parts

Epos Now's ambition was simple: remove the complexity of managing multiple financial providers.

Instead of asking SME customers to use separate providers for payments, banking, and business spending, Epos Now embedded these services alongside its point-of-sale software.

The result is a connected platform that removes operational complexity to make it easier for businesses to manage their finances. To date, there are over 80,000 locations across the world using Epos Now.

That simplicity resonates with the manager of a convenience store, whose business uses Epos Now's payments and capital solutions, "It makes much more sense to have everything in one system instead of using different providers."

For Jason, payments provide the foundation for everything that follows, "Once payments are in place, adding accounts, cards, or capital becomes just another click."

Quicker access to capital

Accessing business finance has traditionally been slow, manual, and difficult for many small businesses.

Epos Now Capital changes that by offering eligible merchants funding directly within the platform, using payment data to make lending decisions. Repayments are automatically linked to daily card sales, giving businesses greater flexibility as revenue fluctuates.

To date, the product has supported more than 9,000 businesses globally, with 83% of merchants returning for additional funding.

For the owner of a specialist pet shop using Epos Now to run their business, the repayment model removes much of the stress associated with traditional lending.

"If we don't make any sales that day, there's no stress. The repayments just happen automatically through our card sales."

Timing matters as much as the product

Launching embedded financial products is only part of the challenge. Helping merchants discover and adopt them is equally important.

Epos Now introduces payments as part of the core platform from day one, while surfacing products like capital and business accounts at relevant moments throughout the customer journey. This lets merchants adopt additional services when they’ll deliver the most value.

For the owner of a UK pub and hospitality group running on Epos Now, a business account has become a practical way to organise funds for future investments.

"If we've got a project coming up, we simply keep that money separate in the account."

And as Jason explains, awareness is an ongoing process, "It's about making sure customers know these products are there whenever they need them."

Expanding beyond the UK with the full embedded finance suite

As Epos Now expands internationally, a consistent technology platform has been crucial.

They’re now leveraging Adyen's full suite of embedded financial products (Payments, Capital, Accounts, and Issuing) in the UK, with the US rolling out next.

Epos Now Capital is also available today in Australia, Canada, Spain and the US.

Looking ahead, Epos Now sees room for continued expansion, "Having a single platform globally has allowed us to move much faster. There are many more markets and financial services to come."

The blueprint UK businesses can follow

Epos Now's journey demonstrates how SaaS platforms can evolve by embedding financial services directly into their products.

Rather than building banking infrastructure from scratch, Epos Now partnered with Adyen to bring payments, banking, and capital together on a single platform.

The result: a simpler experience for customers, new growth opportunities, and a strong foundation for global scale.

Their journey is a clear example of what's possible when financial services become a natural extension of the software itself.
