Adyen Rolls Out Visa Payment Passkey to Advance the Future of Online Authentication
Gives eligible consumers a simpler way to authenticate online payments using their device unlock method
Builds on Adyen’s approach to optimising authentication as part of the wider payment experience through Authenticate, part of Adyen Uplift
Adyen, the global financial technology platform of choice for leading businesses, today announced the roll out of Visa Payment Passkey* (VPP) through Authenticate, a module within its AI-powered payment optimization suite, Adyen Uplift. This integration provides eligible consumers with a simpler way to authenticate online payments using their device unlock method.
Authentication is essential to secure online payments, but additional steps can introduce friction at a critical point in the customer journey. Visa Payment Passkey is designed to make that experience simpler while providing stronger protection against fraud and phishing attacks.
As the authentication landscape fragments, Authenticate acts as an intelligence layer on top. As a core module of Adyen Uplift, a suite designed to optimize the full payment funnel using AI, Authenticate uses machine learning to decide whether to authenticate a transaction, which method will perform best, and what data to share with the issuer. By adding Visa Payment Passkey as one of the many paths Authenticate can route to, merchants benefit from the latest innovations without needing a new integration each time one launches.
“Authentication shouldn't be a hurdle that disrupts the customer experience,” said Rahul Hampole, SVP Product for Payments at Adyen. “By integrating Visa Payment Passkey into Authenticate, we are giving our merchants a seamless way to protect their customers against fraud while making online checkout faster and more intuitive using familiar device biometrics.”
Visa Payment Passkey is designed to work across both first-time purchases and returning customer journeys. Once a cardholder’s bank has verified their identity and they have created a passkey, they can use their device unlock method to authenticate eligible future purchases.
“The future of commerce will depend on experiences that are both seamless and secure,” said Dan Sanford, SVP Global Product and Initiatives at Visa. “Through innovations such as Visa Payment Passkeys, we're helping embed authentication directly into the payment experience, reducing friction for consumers while strengthening security and improving outcomes for merchants. We're pleased to be working with Adyen to bring these capabilities to market and support the next generation of digital commerce.”
Adyen will initially offer Visa Payment Passkey through Authenticate in the UK, with further enhancements and a global expansion planned for 2027.
Notes to Editors
*After a cardholder’s bank verifies them and they create a passkey with Visa Payment Passkey, they can authenticate future purchases by unlocking their device using a fingerprint or face scan. Biometric data is never collected by or shared with Visa. By using FIDO-based authentication, Visa Payment Passkey also helps protect cardholders against phishing, using a previously authorised device to authenticate the payment.
