As of 1st of February this year, national euro direct debit schemes have been replaced by SEPA direct debits and the final deadline for merchants to switch to SEPA direct debits is 1st of August this year. Adyen was at the forefront of this new market regulation development enabling customers to accept SEPA direct debits since the scheme’s launch and helping them to smoothly make the transition. In supporting SEPA Direct Debit, Adyen enables businesses to make pan-European collections on a one-off or recurring basis in 34 European countries.

With its extensive network of 171 destinations worldwide and more than 31,5 million travellers yearly, airberlin needed a solution to enable customers to pay worldwide with their preferred payment method and local currency. Adyen’s platform is highly scalable, offers access to over 250 payment methods and 187 currencies and will enable airberlin to deliver to customers across the SEPA region a consistent user experience when paying with the new SEPA direct debit scheme. Ease of use and an intuitive interface are vital benefits of the Adyen solution, particularly with the SEPA direct debit scheme replacing well-used methods with which customers have long been familiar. For example, in Germany SEPA direct debit will replace ELV, a very popular payment method offered by banks since in the 1950s. Beyond the SEPA implementation, Adyen will support the airline’s worldwide credit card payments ongoing.

“We knew we could count on Adyen’s global experience and local expertise to ensure our smooth launch of SEPA direct debits, which is a significant milestone for us,” said Friedrich Floto, Senior Vice President Finance Administration at airberlin. “The online experience of making purchases is among the most essential interactions our customers have with our brand and it was crucial to get the SEPA integration right first time.”

“The SEPA initiative highlights the need for merchants to partner with a payment partner that continues to innovate and develops its technology to stay ahead of market demands and keep pace with business needs,” said Roelant Prins, CCO of Adyen. “ Adyen has forged a strong reputation for providing a consistently high quality payment solution worldwide and across multiple sales channels, and the SEPA implementation for airberlin further proves our ability to deliver solutions responding to the fast evolving market requirements.
