In recent years Uganda’s traditional financial institutions have begun to acknowledge that mobile money is rapidly replacing some of their traditional services. Rather than disappear, they’re working to adapt by partnering with local fintechs to create new products that bring Uganda’s digital economy forward.
Mobile money has been credited with bringing millions of Ugandans into the formal economy. According to the Financial Inclusion Insights (FII) Program, just 11% of Ugandans use a traditional bank account, while 43% use mobile money accounts. And while usage continues to be dominated by person-to-person (P2P) transfers and airtime top-ups, the technology behind mobile money is being used to bring new benefits for customers and the economy.
