We believe that building an ethical business isn’t optional

As our formula states: we make good choices to build an ethical business and drive sustainable growth for our merchants. Now, we aim to extend this into societal and environmental action. It was an easy decision to make.
We take responsibility for our environmental impact
We use our technology to do good
We drive positive change in the communities we live and work in
There’s still significant work to do and we’re committed to addressing the challenges that lie ahead. To do so, we use the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as guidelines to create long-term positive returns for people and planet.
We annually calculate and compensate for all greenhouse gases emitted in our operations. In 2019, we did this for the first time and compensated for all emissions since the foundation of Adyen in 2006. We compensate for our emissions by purchasing credits from third-party verified emission reduction projects, also known as “carbon offsets”. These projects support climate action efforts such as reforestation, wildlife protection, and education-focused subsistence farming initiatives.
People want to do good. They want to give to good causes. That's the central assumption behind Adyen Impact. Our Impact product features Giving and Restore make it easy for our merchants and their shoppers to support good causes. Through Giving, we make it easy for our merchants to accept charitable donations from their shoppers in the checkout process. Through Restore, our merchants’ shoppers can compensate for the carbon emissions resulting from their purchase.
Our philosophy of making an impact by leveraging our technology can be applied very widely — these products are just the start.
The Adyen Accelerator is a program dedicated to supporting social enterprises across Europe, with emphasis on amplifying their positive impact on society. We share our knowledge, technological expertise and lessons we’ve learned to help others. At the end of the week, participants pitch with the chance to win a year of mentoring and a €10,000 grand prize.
Recognizing the entrepreneurial spirit of our employees, we encourage our people to set up grassroots initiatives. All Local Initiatives are employee-led and touch upon at least one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
The Adyen Checkathon is a hackathon with a difference. Teaming up with Amsterdam’s female tech community, we use the day-long workshop to focus on solving technical challenges related to payments. Developers, designers, product managers and more are all encouraged to join us.
On bike building day, our San Francisco team spent the day building bicycles for local children. As a Dutch company, we know all too well the joys of cycling, and wanted to share that with children who don’t have access to their own set of wheels.
